Geekmates Cheapskates: Free Comics?!

12 Sep

A love for comics can be an expensive one, especially considering some comic storylines span decades and have countless spinoffs. Figuring out where you want to start and how much you’ll like a series shouldn’t have to cost a lot, but if you are buying a comic here and there to try them out, it can be! I don’t like to spend money if I don’t have to, so I’ve come up with some ideas to help you get your feet wet in comics without breaking the bank!

you’ll be swimming in all the savings!

1. Free comic book apps

Now this one might be a little unfair, because in order to save money you’d have to drop several hundred dollars. So this one is for those who already own an iPad or iPhone and wanna check some things out. There are a few apps out there that allow you to download comic books for free! I have Comic Flow, Comixology, and Dark Horse Comics, which is by far the best of the three. Yesterday I downloaded 40 (!!) comics for free, including some great titles like Falling Skies and Dungeon Siege.

read ALL the comics!!

This is a great way to introduce yourself to a series without spending a ton of money!

2.Free Comic Book Day

The first Saturday of May has been deemed Free Comic Book Day – glorious! Dark Horse comics sends many different issues out to all comic book stores to give out for free. Last May Tony and I went with a few friends and got LOADS of free comic books! It’s a great way to find a new series you like, or at the very least get a few comics to read for free! Make sure you hit up more than one, as different stores will have different issues.

Next year will be Saturday, May 4 2013 – mark it!

3. The library!

Believe it or not, the library is for more than studying old things and being shushed – public libraries have comics! My friend Jenny informed me of this, and I can’t wait to head over and get my free library card. This is a FANTASTIC way to get a taste of different series without any monetary commitment. Not only that, if you don’t mind owning or collecting a series you really like, you could save even more than the average bear!

it’s the largest comic book collection in the universe – you just have to share it.

It can be hard to get started and find a genre or storyline you like – these ideas will help you find your way! Do you have any other suggestions? Leave them in the comments below!

Until next time!
