Geekmates Cheapskates/ Geek Dates: Movie Night

16 Nov

There’s nothing I love more than a good mashup. Kingdom Hearts mixes my love of Disney with JRPG’s, the R2:D2 and Darth Vader Mickey Mouse ear hats are the cutest things on the planet, and then there are an infinite number of image mashups on the internet that make me fangirl squee.

SQUEEEEEE!

So I present you with my own mashup: an idea that crosses my love for everything cheap with my desire to go on the geekiest of dates with husband man. This is Geekmates Cheapskates and Geek Dates: Movie Night!

Tony and I enjoy a good dinner and a movie date, but HOLY MOSES are they expensive! When did the movies get so pricey? The last time we went to the theatre it cost us 40.00 alone, and let’s not even talk about the cost of a semi fancy meal out on the town. So, we have devised a way to have a romantic dinner and a movie date without it costing us half our mortgage payment!

1. Dinner

For the dinner portion you have two options – make something yourself, or order in. A homemade meal is not only delicious but also a lot cheaper than going out, and you can have whatever you want. Try a new recipe, make one of your favourite dishes, or have a themed meal centred around something you both love, or even your movie choice for later.

Your second option is to order in. Now, this may not be a cheaper option – you’ll pay just about the same to pick up your dinner from a restaurant – but with the savings on the second half of your on the cheap date, it won’t be as big of a hit to your wallet as it usually would be. Tony and I chose to order out from our local favourite sushi joint, and it was both delicious and worth the splurge.

om nom nom so delicious! It looks like a lot, but Tony is a sushi machine

2. and a Movie

Onto the entertainment. These days it is really easy to watch movies on the cheap if you’re willing to sacrifice watching them within the first few weeks of their release.

Your first option is renting, either in store on online. Many rental companies have gone the way of the bird, but they do still exist, and are a great way to get your hands on something both old or new, depending on what you are in the mood for. Redbox is another service you can use, if it’s available in your area. You can also do online rentals – online services from the Playstation Network, for example, have regular downloads available, and they have .99 cent rental sales on a regular basis. There are services like this offered through your service provider, as well as sites like Amazon.  As long as it has been released you have a really good chance at finding it through some rental company.

Tony and I decided to rent a bluray from a video store – can you guess what this is?

The second option is a service like Netlix. For 8 bucks a month you have access to hundreds of TV and movie titles, and you can watch as much or as little as you want. The downfall to Netflix is the selection. You may not find what you’re looking for if you were looking for a specific title, but if you’re open to what you watch, you have endless choices that update all the time. Kudos to you if you have American Netflix – that shit is the best! Netflix right now has a great selection of Marvel movies and old cult classic 90’s TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly!

Once your movie is chosen and your food is delivered, cuddle up and enjoy your geeky date night in! Tony and I like to build a blanket fort on the floor, even though it usually makes me fall asleep.

cuddle fort of snoozing <3

Until next time!
