Geekmates Geek Dates – Comics and Coffee
6 Sep
Tony and I are both VERY busy people. We both work, we both are studying for graduate degrees, and we both spend a lot of time running websites (Tony also has a site called bboyscience.com!) – so when we have a chance to hang out and have a date we like to indulge in our love for each other and our love for all the geeky things!
Coming up with ideas is really fun, and we always find ways to incorporate our different focuses together in a cute way so that we both enjoy ourselves. We decided that we would share all of our date ideas with you guys, in a new series called “Geekmates Geek Dates”! Hope you enjoy!
The coffee date
There isn’t a more classic date than the coffee date. First dates the world over have occured in coffee shops and cafes, and it’s a go-to date for Tony and I when we are short on time. So, a couple weeks ago when we had a chance to sip some hot bevs we decided to also take the opportunity to browse the bookshelves of Chapters.
The coffee/bookstore date is perfect for us because bookstores have something for everyone! Tony isn’t as interested in comic books as I am, so while I looked around in the graphic novels and historical fiction, Tony looked in the science sections for something that peaked his interest.
After we made our purchases, we went to the Starbucks attached to Chapters to sit by the fireplace in some comfy chairs and read our new books! This was a great geek date for us – we both got books we were interested in, and we got to spend some time sipping delicious drinks and talking about our book choices.

Carl Sagan and super awesome science stuff for Tony – Deadpool
for me!
This is a perfect date idea for any geeky couple that has slightly varying interests. Everyone has some interest in reading, and big bookstores like Chapters will have something for everyone. Also, lots of Chapters stores have Starbucks attached, so you have both stops in one! They may be a little “trendy” or overdone, but they have lots of drink choices, comfy environments, and usually have couches and lounge chairs to relax in. You can sit together, read something you love, and even share what you’re reading with each other!
Let us know in the comments below about your geek dates, and any suggestions you have for us to take in the future!
Until next time!

sounds awesome! a trip to Disneyland is the ULTIMATE in geeky dates!
shhhh she might find out XD
Eric and I both love to pick multiplayer games that we can play together. This lets us get in our precious video game time while still spending time with each other. We especially love games like Diablo or the new Borderlands (can’t wait!). It’s not really the typical going out date night… more the staying in date night. But you know what they say: Couples who slay together, stay together!
That’s a great idea! Sometimes the best dates involve not going anywhere at all : D
Love this post so so much.
We like to pop some popcorn and then bike on this little path out by our place to see a movie – usually something based on comics like the Avengers or Batman.
That sounds great! Tony and I actually had a movie night here at the house a little while ago I’m using for the next one – great minds think alike ; )
Myself and my lady-friend (Rae) must do online geekdates now. So we play some of our favourite games online together while Skype chatting (WoW, mostly). However, this evening we watched an episode of a TV show while being on Skype(“1, 2, 3, GO! …wait did you hit play on 3 or go?…”) and that was fun and nice, almost like she was right beside me, but a billion miles away at the same time.
I approve of this! Tony and I did the same thing when we were apart for a semester. It makes the distance feel a lot less for sure : )
