It is Halloween, and of course Tony and I dressed up for the occasion! We have been talking about dressing up as a specific famous couple since we met, and finally this year I got into gear early enough to make make it happen! They are from my favorite Disney movie – I know every song including the ones that came on a special cassette of songs NOT in the movie – and Tony and I look like then a little itty bitty bit (I have Native ancestry, and Tony is a super white guy). You probably guessed it by now – Pocahontas and John Smith!
I wanted to look as authentic as possible, so my only option was to sew our costumes ourself (the “Indian Princess” costumes at the local costume store were super-stereotypical). This was intimidating, because I have NEVER sewn before. My year old sewing machine came out of the box for the first time for this. ahem.
I made the Pocahontas necklace first out of Fimo clay, and it was super easy and turned out great. Then onto the clothing aspect. Oh my math. After tears, hair-pulling, rage blackouts, and a couple trips back to the fabric store to make up for mistakes, I finally managed to make a semblance of a costume for both of us. And considering it was my first attempt ever, without a pattern, I think they both turned out great!
I have a new found love for the idea of cosplay now – making the costume from scratch was super fun, and dressing up and belting “Just Around the Riverbend” at the top of my lungs with all my friends had me in stitches.

Until next time!
