to XL or not to XL?

This Sunday (August 19th) Nintendo is releasing its next handheld masterpiece, the Nintendo 3DS XL. I love my DS lite, and I feel like now that the 2nd generation 3DS handheld has come out with minimal tech changes, it’s worth the investment. Even if an “i” version came out like the DSi, I wouldn’t have wished I held out for it. I’m pretty sure.

So now, how do I choose which one to go for?

There are pros and cons to each. The original has charge issues, a smaller than usual screen, and either stretches or shrinks original DS game graphics (although how bad I haven’t yet seen). The XL fixes the charge issue and has a better ratio for DS games graphics, but has ugly choice colors (and trust me this is important), seems a bit big for me in a handheld, and may not work with a 3DS R4 rom card. It’s also more expensive, and the original will probably A) drop in price or B) come out with killer bundles to boost its sales with the new XL release.

one of these will be mine soon. and then I’m gonna give it a moustache decal for fanciness and etiquette.

So how do I choose? I need to see and feel both in my hands. I need to play a DS game as well as a DS game downloaded onto my 3DS R4 rom. I hate decisions.

So this is what I think I’ll do.

1. Wait until the next flyer cycle (August 24th) to see if there are any bundles for the 3DS and the 3DS XL.

2. Buy one of each.

3. Try using an old DS game and my new 3DS r4 rom in both systems.

4. Decide how much the stretching bothers me, and test the rom card in both sizes.

5. Return the loser, and charge the winner!

I already checked at Best Buy, and you have 30 days to return, even if you’ve opened it. So yay! Furthermore, if the 3DS price drops or a 3DS XL bundle appears within 30 days, I will switch them/go get the discount.
